*OWL* Math

The eggs were laid in the OWL BOX on these dates:

• egg 1  ..2/13/2010
• egg 2.. 2/16/2010
• egg 3..2/18/2010
• egg 4.. 2/20/2010
• egg 5.. 2/22/2010
• egg 6.. 2/25/2010

Barn Owl eggs take an average of 33 days to hatch. Can you predict when they will hatch? Use a calendar to count out the days.

SUPER HINT: remember that February only has 28 days!!

Actual hatching dates:

• egg 1 -did not hatch-
• egg 2 (MAX) hatched on 3/21/2010 .. 12 days in Feb and 21 days in Mar = 33 days
• egg 3 (PATTISON) hatched on 3/23/2010.. 10 days in Feb and 23 days in Mar = 33 days
• egg 4 (AUSTIN) hatched on 3/25/2010… 8 days in Feb and 25 days in Mar=33 days
• egg 5 (WESLEY) hatched on 3/28/2010… 6 days in Feb and 28 days in Mar =34 days
• egg 6

MORE FUN!! with *OWL* MATH

QUESTION: When will the owlets leave the nest?

Owlets typically leave after ABOUT 50 or 60 days in the nest. (This is an estimate and might take longer.)

• If  Max (egg 2) hatched on March 21, when will he leave the nest?

March=10 days

+ April=30 days

+ May =10 days

…so  then we would get to May 10th, 2010 as a good prediction.

• If Pattison (egg 3) hatched on March 23, when will he leave the nest?

March=8 days

+ April=30 days

+ May=12 days

…so May12th – May 22nd, 2010 is a good prediction
